Grade 3/4

Vibrant, safe and challenging our Grade 3/4 classes support students to develop strong academic, social and intrapersonal skills in a stimulating and engaging environment, as they explore their place in a changing world. Year 3/4 students focus on developing independence, accepting responsibility and being organised in and beyond the classroom.

Provided with a variety of individual and collaborative learning opportunities, students begin to develop the social, self-management and leadership skills that will help them reach their full potential in the future. Students look forward to the opportunity to be responsible for school-wide roles, such as monitors responsible for chickens, compost and bins.

Reading
In line with the school goal of creating passionate and well-rounded readers, the Grade 3/4 Reading program does just that. Our students participate in daily lessons in line with the Daily 5 reading program where students have choice and autonomy over their reading activities when choosing the order in which they Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, or enjoy Word Work activities. This self-direction along with explicit teaching and differentiated guided reading sessions ensures students continue to reach their full potential.

Writing
Purposeful and incredibly fun, the students in Grade 3/4 continue to engage in Writing lessons that demand their attention and excite their inner writer. Continuing to develop their knowledge of text types and writing skills through the VCOP program, our middle school writers partake in regular and meaningful writing assessments called Big Writes and Cold Writes where students self=assess, and with teacher assistance, set well-informed writing goals.

Maths
Mathematics in Grade 3/4 focuses on developing increasingly and refined mathematical understandings, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem-solving. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently. At Syndal South, students are challenged with open-ended problems, supported with hands-on activities and complete learning experiences targeted to their every changing understandings.
